Family excited about their new dog

New Dog Checklist

Here are some items you might find helpful for your new dog!

It can feel overwhelming bringing a new canine companion into your life! It's easy to feel this way whether you're a brand new dog owner or a seasoned veteran. We've compiled a list below to help you get started with some items that you might need!

  • Crates can be a great training tool as your pup gets potty trained and can help keep them safe as they learn the parameters of their new home! Not only are they a great tool for puppies, but did you know they can be a great tool for adult dogs as well?

  • Enrichment Toys are a must for dog owners wanting to keep their dogs mentally stimulated! These toys can also aid in helping keep your dog out of trouble by providing a constructive way to spend their time. Here at IGAD we always say "if you don't provide your dog with fun, they will make their own."

  • Dog Bowls are a necessity for feeding your dog. Bowls with non-skid bottoms can be helpful in minimizing instances of "traveling bowls" while eating, so as long as your dog does carry it elsewhere!

  • Harnesses can be a great way to keep your dog safe while going on a walk. Be sure to check out our suggestions for properly sizing the harness!

  • Leashes are important for following your local leash laws! They are also a great tool for keeping your pup next to you.

  • Collars are great for attaching your new family member's identification. Some collars can also make it easier to see your dog at night!

  • Dog Beds can help your dog feel more comfortable in their new home!

Did You Know?

Did you know that you can lower your stress levels when you adopt a minimum of 5 dogs? Okay...maybe we made that up, but studies show that owning a dog can have a positive impact on your health such as lowering your stress levels.

Additional Tools

Jack Russell Terrier sitting and waiting for a reward.

Treats

Treats can be a great way to reward your dog for behaviors that you want repeated.

Long Lead

A long lead can be a great way to allow your dog some additional freedom and a chance to practice exercises such as recall.

Clickers

We love using clickers to teach dogs new behaviors. The clicker creates a distinctive noise that can mark a specific behavior we prefer.
